Ryder Cup Golf, 50,000 fans per day expected in Rome

The tournament begins on September 29th: USA vs Europe. Sold out at the “Marco Simone” camp in Guidonia. Americans are enchanted by sunsets and Trastevere

This morning the first shuttles left the city while Rome was still plunged into darkness. The spectators arrived at Marco Simone’s in Guidonia before dawn and the gates opened at a quarter to seven. And at that moment the party started immediately. Because that’s what the Ryder Cup is: a sacred display that began almost a century ago, in 1927, and every two years celebrates itself and all of golf, honors tradition and speaks of the future. USA versus Europe, golf that appeals even to those who don’t understand it. Heart and passion, drama and pain. Ryder’s 100-year journey begins today in Rome, the race doesn’t start until Friday and ends on Sunday, but the teams have already been in Italy since yesterday when the players began training. From today, the entire ceremony follows its sacred and unchanging liturgy: official photos, training sessions, test rounds, press conferences, gala meetings. From today to Sunday, around 50,000 people will take part in Marco Simone every day, with no distinction between test days and competition days. Fans from all over the world will travel to the first Italian Ryder Cup. Tickets were distributed in 85 countries. Italy, the USA, Great Britain, Germany and Ireland are the countries where the most were sold. The Ryder will be broadcast in 201 countries: the tournament will be filmed with over 80 cameras along the 18 holes to create the international signal.

Tickets sold out

Golf is one of the most popular sports in the world. It is played everywhere and on all continents. And Rome is now the center of the empire: tickets have been sold out for months, hotels are full. The captains of Europe (Luke Donald) and the USA (Zach Johnson) have been working for months to present the best teams, the organizers for much longer, since December 2015, when the Ryder was officially assigned to Italy. Zach Johnson joked: “This place never disappoints and I know the players feel the same way.” The Americans had come to test the pitch in early September and it didn’t take long for them to be won over by the Roman delicacies included Dinner in a trattoria in Trastevere and sunsets that could be admired from the terrace of the hotel where both teams are staying in Monte Mario and overlooking the city. This time they arrived accompanied by their wives and companions, except for Jordan Spieth, who has just become a father, and the women were also in uniform when they got off the plane: the group spirit is also strengthened by the involvement of the families. “The guys are ready,” Johnson said. “Well that’s actually a lie because they’re exhausted but they’ll be ready on Friday.”

the elegance of the Ryder

Yesterday they arrived at Marco Simone’s individually. A little bit on the driving range, a little bit on the putting green. The Americans are struggling to overcome the time zone, the Europeans – very elegant in their uniform with beige Loro Piana training Bermuda shorts – are working on approaches and someone like Hovland is also working on the long game. Europe captain Luke Donald seemed the most enthusiastic: “I’m very excited, it’s been more than a year since I came here to see the pitch, it’s going to be something spectacular.” Everyone involved in the organization has one Did an extraordinary job, I’ve never seen such large stands and the catering area is also impressive. As a captain you have to be confident. This is a more complicated role than that of a simple player because you have to lead a team and bring together different characters and ideas. As a player you have your fate in your hands, while in my role you can only watch. But I will try to enjoy every moment as much as possible.

the Ryder Tiger

There is just a little sadness in the big Ryder party, because Tiger Woods is one of the main absentees. He hasn’t been seen virtually since the Masters in April, aside from a rare and fleeting social appearance for a few shots at the driving range. Zach Johnson confirmed: “He’s not coming. But Tiger always encourages us, writes messages to the players and my vice-captains, I am grateful to him for that, he is the best of our generation.”
