Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Super Mario RPG bring the Nintendo mascot back to the Switch after years of absence (Odyssey is from 2017).

At today’s Nintendo Direct, the Japanese company not only introduced one, but two new Mario video games that are due to be released this year. It is a completely new title in two dimensions and the remake of an iconic classic that has never arrived in Europe before. The aim is to further establish the mustachioed plumber as a pop icon following the commercial success of Super Mario Bros. The Movie. Let’s take a look at all the official details that Nintendo shared.

Super Mario Bros Wonder –

The first is Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Arrived as “One More Thing” at the end of the Nintendo Direct, Wonder is “the next evolution of the 2D side-scrolling Super Mario Bros. games coming to Nintendo Switch.” Touching a Magic Flower in-game unlocks Wonders of the World. For example, pipes could come to life, hordes of enemies could appear, or characters’ appearances could be altered, altering gameplay in unpredictable ways. Each level hides different surprises.” Playable characters include Princess Peach, Princess Daisy and Yoshi, as well as familiar characters like Mario, Luigi and Toad. But stealing the show is Mario’s new transformation, which will transform him into an elephant. The launch is scheduled for October 20th.

Super Mario RPG –

The second is Super Mario RPG. This is the remake of the great classic with a modern look, made in collaboration with Square for SNES. Despite being a remake, as happened recently, Live A Live is also a European premiere as the original was only released in Japan and the US. “Join Mario, Bowser, Princess Peach and original characters Mallow and Geno in an RPG full of twists and treasures. “Mario must join forces with his allies to stop the evil Blacksmith Band, reclaim seven stars, and repair the Starway,” reads the game’s description. Which also has historical value: With its turn-based combat, it was the first role-playing game in Mario history. Release is scheduled for November 17th.

And Princess Peach… –

Among the great news of Nintendo Direct is Princess Peach, who for the first time in the history of the series will be the protagonist of her own video game. We don’t know much about the title, except that it will be available throughout 2024 (along with Luigi’s Mansion 2, one of the few present at the event, although they won’t be appearing this year). From the brief gameplay preview that we’ve been able to see, it should be a 2D musical platformer with an exquisite graphic design that at times recalls that of Mario Galaxy. But we’ll have to wait to find out more.
