Excellent performance from Gregorio, Criscio, Battiston and Mormile who return to the podium thanks to wins over China, Spain and Germany

Italy’s bronze shines in the team competition that closed today’s leg of the Women’s Saber World Cup in Athens. The quartet of Rossella Gregorio, Martina Criscio, Michela Battiston and Chiara Mormile captured an excellent third place, topping a performance of absolute depth, confirmed by the 45-40 win over Germany in the game that gave away the podium.

The race

The Blues, seeded No. 4 of the draw and therefore legitimately placed in the Round of 16, started their game with a 45-37 win over China in a game consistently waged with confidence and personality. In the quarter-finals, they met Spain, who advanced eight lengths. At the crucial moment of the attack, however, Michela Battiston, with a score of +4, started the comeback, which was completed by Martina Criscio, who, with a positive record of 7 goals in the last part, let Italy win 45-42. In the semi-final against France, the Azzurri fought at eye level for long stretches, only to then bow to the Transalpines in the final phase with 45:36 as the winner of the game in front of Korea. The defeat steered the Italian quartet into the finals for third and fourth place, where Gregorio and his companions promptly redeemed themselves, defeating Germany and capturing a well-deserved bronze.

Positive balance

For trainer Nicola Zanotti’s saber blue women’s team, now led by champions Andrea Aquili and Benedetto Buenza at the bottom of the stands, Athens is their second podium of the season in three races after second place in the opening stage at Tunis, with excellent results that scored by the sabers in the men’s World Cup stage in Padua between Friday and yesterday, where Italy received applause in front of the home crowd of the Luxardo Trophy.
